EC’s approval ‘not needed for relief works’

Srinagar: The Election Commission of India has said that all relief and rehabilitation measures, being carried out under both state and central schemes, can be continued without seeking the commission’s approval. This relaxation also applies to the measures aimed at mitigating the hardships of people.
An ECI communiqué, issued by the General Administration Department, also said that ex-gratia payments and other relief funds can be handed over to the affected persons or families directly.
The commission’s sanction is also not needed for direct payments made to hospitals from Chief Minister’s and Prime Minister’s relief funds for treatment of the affected persons.
The communiqué also said that administrative and financial procedures needed for such works, like bulk purchase of relief items and floating of tenders shall be undertaken after following prescribed procedures.
