SRINAGAR: Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and several other top BJP leaders are expected to visit Kashmir Valley to campaign for the party’s Assembly candidates, its state leaders said.
“In the coming weeks, Modi ji will be our star campaigner. Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Ravi Shankar Prasad and many other top leaders will be among our star campaigners in the Valley,” BJP spokesperson Khalid Jahangir told Kashmir Reader.
“We are still in touch with the party high command to see if more leaders can be added to the list,” he added.
Modi is learnt to address two “mega” poll rallies in this summer capital of the state. Arun Jaitley and BJP president Amit Shah are also expected to pitch in.
The Indian National Congress, which was part of the previous two coalition governments in the state, is yet to submit its list of star campaigners to the Election Commission of India.
However, AICC spokesman Salman Anees Soz told Kashmir Reader “Sonia ji and Rahul ji will visit the state to support us in campaigning. Apart from them, I don’t know who others will make it to the list of star campaigners.”
Soz said the final decision on top campaigners for Kashmir polls will be taken by the party high command in coming days.
So far, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Janata Dal (United), Lok Jan Shakti Party and National Panthers party have submitted their star campaigners’ lists to ECI.
NCP’s list includes 39 names, including its president Sharad Pawar and general secretary Tariq Anwar.
The five-phase elections are scheduled to start from November 25.
Besides the state’s principal pro-India political parties such as National Conference and People’s Democratic Party, Indian national parties BJP and Congress too are aiming at forming a government on their own and both have fielded candidates on all 87 seats.
