Srinagar: A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and a Lashkar-e-Toiba militant were Tuesday killed in a fierce encounter in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
According to an army spokesman, acting on specific information about the presence of three militants in Gunabadar village of Handwara, a joint team of police and army launched a search operation on Monday night.
Contact with the militants was established at 0645 hours, the spokesman said, adding that the militants had opened fire on the search party, inviting retaliation by them.
Army said that a militant was killed in the exchange of fire. A JCO sustained injuries and later succumbed as he couldn’t be evacuated due to heavy firing by militants, reports said.
The slain officer was identified as Rajesh Kumar of 14 Mahar.
The exchange of fire was on when last reports came in.
