READER IMPACT: Excise officials start drive against cannabis


ANANTNAG: A day after this newspaper carried a news report on the harvesting of the cannabis in several villages of Bijbehara excise officials Thursday started a major destruction drive against the crop.
Reports said that a team of excise officials headed by Deputy Commissioner (DC) Excise, Gulzar Shabnam reached the area this afternoon along with machines and started destroying the crop. The drive, they said was started from Dupatyar village, one of the biggest cannabis producing villages in India.
DC Excise, Gulzar Shabnam, confirmed that the drive was started against the cannabis in the area today. “I rushed to the area this morning along with at least 20 officials and found scores of people extracting charas from the crop. The crop was destroyed on the spot and the drive will continue until every plant is destroyed,” DC Excise said.
He said, “We have also identified at least ten smugglers and cultivators of the bangh in the village and have collected all the data against them. They will be booked under the excise act,” Gulzar told Kashmir Reader.
He said that his officials will be camping in the area from Saturday and will leave the area only after the whole crop is destroyed.
