Violators flay HC orders by constructing buildings on Lidder banks

ANANTNAG: Despite the High Court orders to remove the illegal constructions on the banks of Lidder and other rivers, influential people are continuing their construction on in Movura area of Pahalgam resort.
Sources and locals said that at least four to five under-construction huts and guest houses were completed at the spot during the past two weeks.
“Despite HC’s fresh order and directions by the deputy commissioner Anantnag ordering removal of all the plantations and constructions on the embankments of Lidder and its tributaries within fifteen days there is no let up in the illegal constructions at Yanner and Movura. During the past two weeks several under-construction huts and guest houses were completed,” a group of locals told Kashmir Reader.
They said that an influential person from Srinagar completed his illegal commercial structure overnight on the eve of Eid.
“He managed to erect the illegal structure over night by employing over a dozen labourers on construction work. Though the Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA) officials visited the spot and objected to his illegal construction but they didn’t dare to touch the structure,” they said.
“Many other influential people, whose illegal structures were under way, took advantage of the flood situation and got their constructions completed,” said a local, Mohammad Ishaq.
He said that the major repair work is being carried out on many illegal structures.
“On one hand the administration has ordered the removal of constructions on the banks of Lidder and other rivers in the district while on the other hand fresh constructions are allowed to come up,” said another local, Abdul Rashid.
Expressing helplessness in stopping the illegal constructions on the banks of the Lidder in the area, executive engineer PDA, Muzaffar Ahmad said, “There are many other agencies who are supposed to play their part to stop the banks of the river from further encroachment. PDA cannot do it alone.”
About the recent violations he said, “We have written to police for registration of FIR against the violator but I don’t know whether FIR has been lodged or not.”
On why illegal structures are not demolished despite HC order Muzaffar said, “Whenever our officials go for the demolition they are being attacked by the violators. Police and flood control department has to cooperate with us.”
