Srinagar: A member of Hizbul Mujahideen militant outfit was killed in an overnight gunbattle with soldiers in Pulwama district of south Kashmir, police said Friday.
“The gunbattle at Chursoo (in Pulwama), which began (Thursday) night, ended (Friday) morning. Body of one militant has been recovered,” a police spokesman said in a handout here.
It said the encounter began when soldiers launched a search operation following information about presence of militants there.
The slain militant was later identified as Showkat Ahmad Qasba, the police said. “An Insas rifle has been recovered from the encounter site.”
Qasba, the father of three little children, had reportedly joined the ranks of militants two months ago.
Report said the soldiers blasted the house in which the militant had taken shelter to neutralize him. Later, two sons of the house owner were arrested by the soldiers. They were identified as Nisar Ahmed Lone and Showkat Ahmed Lone.
Soon after the gunfight ended, hundreds of people rushed towards the encounter site demanding body of the slain militant.
Later, amid pro-freedom slogans, scores of angry youth resorted to stone-pelting while police and paramilitary forces burst tear-smoke shells to disperse the protestors.
