Baramulla: A policeman was killed while three others, including an officer was injured in a surprise militant attack on Friday night in Sopore town of this north Kashmir district.
Constable Mohammad Syed Khan of Milyal, Kupwara was killed and four of his team members, including an officer were injured when militants tossed a hand grenade and fired indiscriminately at them near Jamia Masjid, Chota Bazar of the Sopore town on Friday night, reports Saturday said. The injured policemen identified as Inspector Dilraj Singh, Head Constable Yusuf- ul-Umar, and constables Anaytullah and Imtiyaz Ahmad were removed to the sub-district hospital, Sopore and army’s Badami Bagh hospital for treatment.
The attack, officials said took place when the police team was chasing a group of youth, who were hurling stones at the police and CRPF troopers.
Soon after the attack, army, SOG of police and CRPF teams reached the spot and carried out search operations in the area to nab the militants. However, the forces called off the search operation after failing to find any clue.
Earlier, protesters attacked CRPF bunkers and the police station Sopore after they heard that two youth have been arrested by police during post-Friday protests. Several people were injured in the overnight clashes in the town. Two of the injured have been identified as Mudasir Ahmad and Muzaffar Ahmad.
Late night protests also broke out in Palhallan, Patten. At many places, the locals were chanting pro-freedom and anti-India slogans through the loudspeaker of Masjids.
A police spokesman said that utmost restraint was exhibited by cops by not retaliating to the militant attack amid apprehension of civilian casualties.
