Quimoo, Kulgam: A 15-year-old boy was killed Saturday here in firing by paramilitary CRPF troopers on a group of people protesting against the ongoing Israeli aggression on Palestinians.
Eyewitnesses said that scores of youth took to streets after the ‘zuhar’ prayers to protest the Israeli aggression in Gaza and firing on anti-Israel protesters on Friday in which a youth had received bullet injuries.
As the youth pelted stones on CRPF personnel, the latter retaliated by opening fire, resulting in injuries to a boy. He was immediately taken to the nearby hospital where from the doctors referred him to district hospital Anantnag. However, he succumbed to injuries on way to hospital.
The slain boy was identified as Suhail Ahmad Lone, son of Ghulam Qadir Lone of Hawoora, Khudwani. “He had received bullet in his chest and was brought dead here,” Medical Superintendent, DH Anantnag, Dr Fazil Kochak told Kashmir Reader.
When the news about the killing spread in the area, huge number of people including men and women took to roads and staged pro-freedom and anti-India protests. The body of the boy was carried in a procession amid pro-freedom slogans.
After offering Nimaz-e-Jinaza of the deceased in the main chowk, people later took his body to his native village in a huge procession. After his burial hundreds of youth assembled in Khudwani and Quimoo and clashed with the forces who were deployed in huge numbers in the area. The forces resorted to intense teargas shelling to disperse the angry youth. The clashes continued till late evening.
The authorities are likely to impose restrictions in the area on Sunday. “Since the situation remains tense in the area and there is every possibility of the violent protests, we will have to impose restrictions,” a police official told Kashmir Reader.
In Srinagar a police spokesman said, “An unfortunate incident of firing has taken place in Khudwani Kulgam in which one boy namely Suhail Ahmad lost his life. The circumstances leading to the incident of firing are being enquired into. Police has registered an FIR in the incident and matter is being probed.”
Meanwhile, Geelani-led Hurriyat Conference has called for a shutdown on Sunday in Kulgam against the killing of the youth.
A Hurriyat spokesman said the strike call was for the south Kashmir district only.
