Srinagar: A youth was killed Wednesday when a littered shell exploded in central Kashmir’s Tosmaidan meadow.
26-year-old Hilal Ahmad Parray, son of Ghulam Mohammad, of Cherhar, Beerwah was collecting firewood when a littered shell in the area adjacent to Tosmaidan suddenly exploded.
Parray succumbed to his injuries on way to a hospital, a police official said. More than 70 people have been killed and hundreds left injured due to the littered shells in the meadow in the past 50 years.
In April 2014, the lease allowing the 3,000-acre meadow to be used for military practice came to an end, and although the army has sought an extension, large protests by local people and the election season stopped the government from extending it.
