Srinagar: Suspected militants Wednesday shot dead a former Ikhwani (government gunman) in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
Reports said Gowhar Ahmed Matoo, son of Bashir Ahmed, of Ganjipora, Kulgam was on way to his home when gunmen appeared near Khudwani market and pumped two bullets in his head, killing him instantly.
Soon after the incident, police, army and paramilitary troopers rushed to the spot and launched a search operation. No arrest was however made during the operation.
Gowhar, who worked for many years as a top government gunman and was involved in a number of criminal cases, had recently joined the Territorial Army and was posted in Kulgam, reports said.
No group has claimed responsibility for the killing.
