Zandfaran residents stage anti-PDD protests

Baramulla: The residents of Zandfaran here staged protests on Saturday against the power development department (PDD) accusing them of selling the transformer that was taken for repairs after damaged last month.
Hundreds of residents of Zandfaran assembled near petrol pump, Sheeri on the Srinagar-Muzafferabad highway this morning and staged anti-PDD demonstrations, eyewitnesses said. Chanting slogans, the protesters alleged that the PDD has sold their transformer that was taken for repairs last month after it developed a snag. The protesters demanding return of their transformer blocked the movement of transport for several hours on the busy highway. Scores of vehicles remained stranded on the highway, as the protests by the villagers intensified.
“Our transformer was taken for repairs after it suffered damage last month. However, the PDD officials brought a worn out transformer to befool us. Within minutes of its installation, the transformer blew up,” Abdul Majid Malik, a protester said.
He alleged that the PDD officials sold their copper made transformer to other villagers and brought old silver made transformer to their village.
As the protests were going on, Tehsildar, Baramulla, Nazir Ahmad and Station House Officer (SHO) Sheeri Nasir Ahmad reached the spot and pacified the protesters by promising to solve their problem within two days. Following assurances, the protesters dispersed peacefully.
