Srinagar: Police Tuesday detained 37 beggars as part of a “special drive” to rid this summer capital city of the menace.
“On the directions of SSP Srinagar Amit Kumar, 37 local and non-local beggars were detained as police launched a special drive against the beggars who have swarmed the city these days causing annoyance to the general public,” a police spokesman said.
“A number of public delegations had apprised SSP Srinagar about the mushroom growth of beggars in city who create nuisance at public places and places of worship. The menace of begging is assuming alarming proportions in city and other districts,” the spokesman said.
The arrested beggars were produced before the local magistrates under Jammu and Kashmir Beggary Act, 1960 who have ordered their push back to their native places.
The drive will continue in the future also, the spokesman said.
