Srinagar: Putting all speculations to rest, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday nominated high profile Srinagar based businessman and core group member of the party Mohammad Altaf Bukhari for Amira Kadal constituency in the upcoming Legislative Assembly polls.
The development comes after ruling National Conference president and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was suggested in the Central Working Committee meeting of the party by his senior leaders to contest from the said Assembly segment among Sonawar and Hazratbal. Currently, the constituency is retained by NC’s Provincial president Kashmir and MLA Nasir Aslam Sogami.
Bukhari, Managing Director FIL Industries limited was earlier nominated for Rajya Sabha polls but he failed to gain numbers in order to make entry into the Parliament in 2009. His candidature at this time, PDP insiders said was taken after deliberations by the core group members. To note, Bukhari is himself a core group member and treasurer of the party.
Bukhari’s candidature from the constituency has set tongues a wagging in the party. “Tariq Karra, his close aides is not satisfied with his mandate. “He (Bukhari) is devoted party leader but working on ground is something different. There were some eligible workers in the constituency but they simply were sidelined,” they told Kashmir Reader.
Insiders believe this would have an “adverse impact” on the party’s electoral outcome.
Meanwhile, the party’s is yet to arrive on a decision to finalise the candidature for Batamaloo, Baramulla, Eidgah, Habbakadal, Pulwama and Wachi constituencies. As already reported by Kashmir Reader, senior party leader Tariq Karra and Muzaffar Hussain Baig were lobbying hard to secure tickets for their kin. Karra is vying to secure mandate for his wife Arifa Tariq Karra from Batamaloo constituency. In 2008 elections, Arifa lost the polls to NC’s Mubarak Gul from Eidgah constituency.
On the other hand Baig is leading the lobbying to secure the ticket for his kin. Similarly, sources said the party remained indecisive over Pulwama segment. “There are three prospective candidates in that assembly segment; Khalil Band, Showkat gayoor and Bari Andrabi. The trio has solid base among the workers and each of them is vying to secure mandate. So the indecisiveness,” sources said.
