Water scarcity sparks protests in Bemina

Srinagar: Dozens of people on Sunday held protests over scarcity of drinking water in Bemina here.
Reports said residents of Naveed Abad, Khumani Chowk, in Bemina blocked the Srinagar-Budgam road and chanted anti-government slogans.
The protestors said they were facing huge hardships because of the water scarcity in the area. “For the past one month we are without water and we have to travel two kilometers by foot to fetch some amount of water,” the protestors said.
“We are facing a lot of problems as PHE has not been able to restore water supply to our area. Water is not a luxury, but a necessity, how can they expect us to live without it. We don’t have water to drink or cooking purposes,” said a protestor Mohammad Ashraf Dar.
“There is not a drop of water to drink as taps have run dry. On Saturday, we visited the office of Executive Engineer Public Health Engineering with the request to restore supply to the village but to no avail,” he added.
