PSA invoked 16,329 times since 1988

Srinagar: Authorities have invoked the Public Safety Act, described by Amnesty International as a lawless law, 16,329 times since the eruption of militancy in the late 1980s.
Replying to an RTI application filed by Abdul Manan Bukhari, legal cell head of Mirwaiz Umar –led Hurriyat, the state Home department has said that since 1988, out of 16,329 cases of PSA 249 persons were booked repeatedly under the law while during the same period 707 FIRs were filed against juveniles.
The Home Department has also revealed that 1311 complaints and FIRs have been lodged against government forces on different charges including rape and killings since 1988.
