Jammu produces 675 tons of cocoon, farmers garner `12.5 crores

JAMMU: Jammu province produced 675 m tons of silk cocoon with farmers generating a revenue Rs 12.50 crore during the last fiscal.
According to officials there are 20,010 silkworm farmers in the province with government setting up 88 mulberry nurseries to cater to the mulberry plant demand of farmers in the province.
The officials from Sericulture Departments said that that under centrally-sponsored schemes, 4.53 lakh of mulberry plants were distributed to 2836 farmers, 576 beneficiaries were provided incentive for construction of rearing houses and 960 beneficiaries were provided rearing equipments.
He said that efforts are being made to flourish sericulture in temperate areas for which polygreen houses are introduced for raising of mulberry plants.
