Anantnag: A heritage building of the Tourism Department was among 15 structures gutted Monday in a devastating fire in south Kashmir’s Pahalgam.
The fire emerged from the heritage TRC building in the Main Chowk, Pahalgam on Monday evening, instantly engulfing the adjoining shops and hotels, reports said.
In the inferno that was brought under control by the fire fighters after hours of struggle, TRC building, Municipal Committee shopping complex, Hotel Poornima, 15 shops, and SRTC office were damaged.
An ATM of Jammu and Kashmir Bank also suffered damages in the fire. However, no one was injured in the fire, as the officials evacuated all the tourists from the hotels and guest houses before shifting them to safer places.
“The loss of property is believed to be worth crores of rupees. We’ll assess the damage soon,” Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Pahalgam development Authority, Riyaz Wani, told Kashmir Reader.
The TRC building situated in heart of the tourist resort, he said, was the only heritage building.
