Sarpanch ‘locks down CAPD store, thrashes official’

Baramulla: A Sarpanch of ruling National Conference (NC) Thursday allegedly thrashed a store- keeper and locked down a store of the Consumers’ Affairs and Public Distribution (CAPD) in Rafiabad area of this north Kashmir district.
NC Sarpanch Ghulam-ud-din Sheikh of Chaklo village appeared at the CAPD store Thursday morning and allegedly thrashed the store keeper Zafurullah Zargar before shutting down the store.
“Sarpanch ordered me not distribute the rice and other commodities without his presence. However, I didn’t listen to him. I distributed the essentials among the needy in his absence. This infuriated the NC Sarpanch, who reached the store and assaulted me,” Zargar told Kashmir Reader Thursday.
He said after allegedly assaulting him, the NC Sarpanch locked down the store in front of the people, who were waiting for the ration.
Meanwhile, taking serious note of the alleged high- handedness of the NC Sarpanch, the CAPD department has approached police with a formal complaint.
“The store keeper informed me about the incident. We approached the police and filed a complaint against the Sarpanch,” Deputy Director, CAPD, Dr Sheeba told Kashmir Reader.
She said that she has instructed store keepers and other employees of the department to respect Sarpanchs. However, the Panchayat members, she said, can’t take the employees of her department for granted and beat them up.
