SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government on Wednesday appointed K Rajendra Kumar as the new Director General of Police.
Kumar, who hails from Andhra Pradesh, is a 1984 batch IPS officer of the Jammu and Kashmir cadre.
The Cabinet, which met here under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah cleared Kumar’s elevation to the post of DGP.
Kumar has served in the state police in various capacities, including two crucial stints as Inspector General of Police in the Valley during the peak years of militancy.
He has also served as interim DGP of the state for a short duration in 2012 after the retirement of Kuldeep Khoda, who now heads the State Vigilance Commission (SVC).
Currently posted as Special Director General of Police (Coordination), PHQ, Kumar succeeds Ashok Prasad. Prasad was repatriated to New Delhi where he will take up his new assignment as Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau.
