Srinagar: There are as many as 24 hotels and guesthouses in central Kashmir which are under the occupation of armed forces and 19 of them are without a Sewerage Treatment Plant, according to the state’s Tourism Department.
In a compliance report submitted to J&K High Court recently, Director Tourism has stated that vide a letter on March 26, Inspector General of Police, Kashmir Zone, was requested to provide list of hotels/guesthouses presently under the occupation of forces and protected persons so that details about STPs are ascertained.
In response, the department said, the Zonal Police Headquarters vide its letter on March 27 forwarded a list of hotels/guesthouses in central Kashmir.
Perusal of the list, it said, revealed that there are 24 hotels under the occupation of forces.
“Out of them, only five are connected with the STPs as per the information by LAWDA and no guesthouse or the hotel has installed STP on its own,” it said.
Regarding the Darbar Move employees, the Tourism department said Estate Department apprised it that for accommodating the employees, Estate Department has received offer from 161 hotels/guesthouses and request Tourism department for details of registration etc. After verifying the list with LAWDA, it said, only nine hotels are connected with STPs.
On March 25 last, the High Court had asked the Director Tourism to specify whether the hotels and guest houses, which are under permanent occupation of forces and ‘protected’ persons, have STPs.
It had also asked Director to submit report about the hotels and guesthouses which are hired by the Estates Department to accommodate the employees on Darbar Move.
In its latest direction, the High Court directed State Pollution Control Board and Tourism Department to furnish complete details about STPs in the Government accommodations like Circuit Houses, East & West, Guest Houses, East & West at Srinagar or the hotels for Darbar-Move employees and various Government Guest Houses at Jammu.
