Government stresses on modernization of silk processing in J&K

SRINAGAR: The Sericulture Development Department has called for special focus on setting up of modern reeling, weaving, printing and dyeing facilities in silk sector to limit flight of valuable cocoon outside, besides boosting employment.
A high level meeting of Multi Task Force Committee on Sericulture under the chairmanship of Commissioner Secretary Agriculture Production Department J&K, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon was held on Tuesday wherein issues pertaining to the promotion and development of Silk Industry were discussed.
Director Sericulture Development Department, Dr Malik Farooq apprised the meeting that and more automatic silk reeling units need to be set up, so that that 60 per cent of the cocoon crop is consumed locally, saying the move could fetch better returns to cocoon rearers who otherwise have to sell their produce to traders from outside of the state.
During the meeting special emphasis was laid on post cocoon production which involves silk reeling, silk weaving, printing and dyeing to improve value addition and create employment generation.
The meeting was told that a comprehensive action plan has been formulated to develop Post Cocoon Sector on modern lines. In Pre-Cocoon Sector which involves silkworm rearing, the Department of Sericulture has achieved remarkable success in improving and enhancing quality cocoon production with the result, the cocoon production has become attractive and profitable in the State. However, there is need to utilize this production locally for value addition.
Earlier, the website of the Sericulture Development Department was launched by Commissioner Secretary Agriculture Production Department, Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon where all related information has been uploaded for the awareness of farmers. The website will serve as a guideline for all stakeholders who are involved in cocoon and silk yarn production.
