Srinagar: Who is the first person in Kashmir to register for organ donation ? The Director SKIMS , Shaukat Ahmad Zarger knows it but according to Hurriyat leader, Shahid-ul-Islam `chose to misinform’ the public under political pressure. For this `lapse’ the Hurriyat leader has put the Director on notice. The Director has been urged to withdraw the statement wherein he stated that one Showkat Ahmad Zarabi from Down Town Srinagar was the first person from Kashmir to make such an offer.
The notice has made clear that he (Shahid) was the first person to make such an offer on March 29 this year during a seminar at SKIMS. The seminar was attended by noted medical experts and religious scholars stressed need for donation of organs to save precious lives. It was during this conference that Shahid made the will to donate his organs after his death. However, in a statement that appeared in s section of press today, Dr Zarger said the first offer was made on April 16.
The Hurriyat leader said Dr Zarger did not expect such a generous gesture from a `separatist’ and misinformed the public for a purpose. Dr Zarger has been urged to withdraw the statement within 10 days or face legal action.
“I did not make it public notwithstanding the fact that it was big news by our local standards. But how can a person like Dr Zarger distort facts. I am a regular donor for all hospitals since 1984. I donate blood every three months,” he said.
