AIP, PDP supporters clash in Handwara; 5 injured

Baramulla: At least five people were injured during clashes between the supporters of Awami Itihad Party (AIP) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) at Kargam village of Handwara on Monday.
According to reports, the supporters of AIP and PDP shouted slogans and hurled stones at each other after both the parties reached Kargam village to hold their public rallies.
At least five people were injured and dozens of vehicles were damaged from both sides during the clashes, which stopped only after intervention of some senior members of both the parties, reports said.
“Our party members were going to upper belt of Langate to conduct the public rallies at various places. But when they reached Kargam village they were stopped by AIP supporters travelling in dozens of vehicles and they did not allow them to move ahead, which led to the clashes between the two parties,” Ghulam Nabi Panditpori, a senior PDP member told Kashmir Reader.
He said that AIP workers were “frustrated after they saw or huge rally in the area.”
AIP’s president Engineer Rashid was not available for comment despite repeated attempts by Kashmir Reader.
Reports also said that after AIP workers reached Handwara town they tried to enter into Chinar Bagh where Chief Minister Omar Abdullah was addressing a public rally.
However, they were stopped by police.
