Srinagar: Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leaders Showkat Ahmad Bakhshi and Ghulam Rasool Hazari were detained along with several aides when they were leading a torch march in downtown Srinagar on Saturday.
The march was organized in connection with the election boycott campaign, a JKLF spokesman said.
The march was planned from Mukhdoom sahib shrine to Khankahi Mohalla; however, a large contingent of police intercepted it neat Bahawdin sahib.
“Although police detained Showkat Bakshi and Ghulam Rasool Hazari , other participants broke the police cordon and marched on till they were intercepted near Bohri Kadal where police used force to disperse them,” the spokesman said.
“The passion and enthusiasm of the participants especially the youth was a treat to watch and the slogans in favor of election boycott filled the atmosphere on the occasion,” the spokesman said.
Speaking to reporters before the march, Bakhshi “termed Indian elections in Jammu and Kashmir as stage- managed drama to hoodwink international opinion.”
“Participating in these elections cannot be termed anything but betrayal against the national interests of Kashmiris,” he said.
