Traders allege harassment by Com-Tax Department

SRINAGAR: Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) has expressed anguish over the “harassment” of Kashmiri traders by the “autocratic” officials at Lakhanpur and Lower Munda check posts while importing their goods into the state.
“Traders, who are already stressed are being harassed and humiliated by the sales tax persons for fulfilling their targets,” president KTMF, Mohammad Yasin Khan told Kashmir Reader.
“The KTMF is deeply anguished over the harassment at check posts as the goods of traders from valley are stopped with whom the autocratic officers have no sympathy,” Khan daid.
As the Commercial Tax Department sets yearly target of tax collection at the posts and in order to achieve these targets they put extra penalties and fines on the traders, Khan said.
He said as traders are one of the key engines of the state’s tax collection they deserve better treatment but the government and sales tax department is hell bent to put all types of difficulties on the traders.
Accusing the department of turning into corruption hub, KTMF president said instead of brining into tax net unregistered traders to achieve targets they are harassing the registered ones.
