Mirwaiz hails ‘boycott’ in Anantnag, hopes Srinagar will follow suit

Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Friday said that the elections held under the Indian Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir were no alternative to right to self-determination.
Addressing a Friday gathering at Jamia Masjid here, Mirwaiz also expressed hope that just like Anantnag, the Srinagar parliamentary constituency too would witness a major boycott of elections.
Mirwaiz said that “boycott” of elections in Anantnag constituency yesterday should serve as an eye-opener for India and the international community.
“Elections in an internationally- recognized disputed territory like Jammu and Kashmir would always remain a meaningless exercise until the people of the region get to decide their political future as pledged by the international community and the United Nations ,” Mirwaiz said.
He also welcomed statement of the Pakistan Foreign Office Spokesperson that the elections in Jammu and Kashmir could not be a substitute to the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination and urged the United Nations, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the European Union and world human rights bodies to help the Kashmiris in achieving their inalienable right.
Mirwaiz said in the past decade while people of East Timor, Quebec, and South Sudan had been given the right to decide their political future , the international community was yet to fulfill its responsibility regarding Jammu and Kashmir.
Hailing the people of South Kashmir for rejecting the elections, Mirwaiz said that the pro-freedom loving people of Srinagar would also follow the same path as they have done in the past to show their resolve towards the movement.
Mirwaiz said conducting polls in Kashmir was in actuality illegal as far as international laws are concerned because two important stakeholders –the people of kashmir and Pakistan— had “already rejected the poll process as futile.”
