SRINAGAR: Muzaffer Maqbool is having a dream run in the circuit this season, winning yet another race. The latest one pocketed by the young Budgam athlete was the 4th JK Bank Run for Shahr-E-Khaas in the senior category on Wednesday. In junior category, Zubair, who plies his trade of Chinar Sports Club, was the winner.
The run, that according to the organizers’ estimates witnessed participation of around 1533 athletes from various districts of the Valley, started TRC ground to Islamia College Hawal.
The event was flagged off by Deputy-Commissioner Srinagar, Farooq Ahmad Shah along with JK Bank executive President and Chairman Sports Board, Abdul Hamid Banday.
Muzaffer was accompanied by JK Bank’s Tanveer Hussain-second- and Hamid of Islamia College (third) in the podium finish. Manan of Dama Sports Club Sopore had a good debut outing getting fourth spot, followed by Mohd Saleem of Chinar Sports Club Budgam.
Chinar Sports Club had a field day in junior category, snaring all three positions. Zubair stood first followed by his club mates Parveez and Adil to make it all Chinar Sports Club podium appearance. Chinar Sports were awarded Team champions trophy.
The event was organized by J&K Sports Development Association (JKSDA) from last four years with the aim to highlight Old city heritage and talent.
The prize distribution ceremony was held at Islamia College in which deputy Commissioner was chief guest while as Principal Islamia College was guest of honor. Among others present were, SP North Tahir Saleem, JKSDA Executive office bearer, Tariq Rashid Ghani, JKSDA President Bashir Ahmad Malik, JKSDA Vice-Presidents, Mir Nazir and Rauf Ahmad Tramboo, Maqsood Ahmad.
Hailing the event as premier sports event of the Old City, Farooq Shah said, “It is fourth edition of the event and it has become premier sports event of the Old City. I am happy to see its growth in terms of participation and also at organizing level”.
“I want old city to become hub of sports and other extra circular activities. We are going to install reading rooms and gymnasiums in every community hall of the City for the youth shortly,” he said.
On the occasion Deputy-Commissioner announced construction of Indoor Sports Hall for Islamia College and also announced cash prize of rupees 10 thousand for the Taekwon-do team that gave daredevil demonstration during the function.
