Rampur: Cine star-turned-Congress hopeful from Meerut, Nagma, put herself in a spot after she confused late shehnai maestro Bismillah Khan with Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani, saying the Kashmiri pro-freedom leader is a ‘Bharat Ratna’.
Nagma made the gaffe during a poll rally for Congress candidate Kazim Ali Khan, the titular Nawab of Rampur.
“Geelani ji desh ke zimmedar vyakti hain, jinko Bharat Ratna mila hai, toh Giriraj ji ke hisaab se unko bhi Pakistan chale jana chahiye (Geelani ji is a responsible person who has got Bharat Ratna…as per Giriraj ji he should also go to Pakistan),” she said.
Nagma was apparently referring to the controversy triggered by BJP leader Giriraj Singh after he said that “all those who are opposed to Narendra Modi should go to Pakistan.”
Bismallah Khan’s family is in the news after they rejected an offer Monday by the BJP to become proposer for Narendra Modi when he files his nomination from Varanasi.
And, Geelani is ruling the air waves ever since he claimed that Narendra Modi had sent an emissary to him for opening a dialogue with the BJP leader.
Nagma joined the Congress before the 2004 Lok Sabha elections and is an active campaigner for the party in 2014.
However, it has been a rough ride for her in electoral politics.
The 39-year-old actress was seen on camera being pushed and manhandled by unruly crowds during campaigning in Meerut.
Then there was controversy surrounding an alleged attempt made by a Congress legislator to kiss her. In another public meeting, she slapped a man who allegedly tried to grope her.
However, Nagma has been steadfast in denying any harassment during campaigning.—Agencies
