Srinagar: Suspected militants shot dead a Sarpanch affiliated to opposition People’s Democratic Party in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district, police said on Friday.
Two unidentified gunmen knocked at the door of Mohammad Amin Pandith at around 10.30 pm on Thursday night at Gulzarpora in Awantipora area and asked him to come out on the pretext of discussing some poll-related issues, police said.
As soon as Pandith reached the main gate of his residential compound, the gunmen shot him dead, the official said.
No militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the act.
This is the first political killing in Jammu and Kashmir since the Election Commission announced the five-phased Lok Sabha polls in the state.
Pulwama district, which is part of Anantnag Lok Sabha constituency, goes to polls on April 24 in the third phase.
On Sunday, militants attacked the residence of a ruling National Conference youth leader in Khrew area of Pulwama district, killing two policemen before the two assailants were shot dead by the army.
