Fake scribes held for extortion

Srinagar: Police have arrested three extortionists posing as journalists in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
Quoting police sources, a local news agency CNS reported that the three men posing as scribes were blackmailing a store-keeper of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department from Lar Block and were demanding money from him.
“The storekeeper Manzoor Ahmed Bhat informed the police and they were caught red handed accepting Rs 3000 from him,” police said adding that an FIR vide order number 51/2014 has been lodged against the trio. The accused have been identified as Muhammad Umar aka Sonu (Hari Tral), Ghulam Ahmed Kuchay (Shalimar Srinagar) and Fayaz Khaliq Bhat (Hubhama Kupwara) who claimed that they were reporters working with Srinagar based news papers.
Police said that trio were carrying the newspaper ID cards. However, they were valid only till last year. Upon checking with the newspapers, it was found that they were no longer working for them.
The trio had allegedly been extorting money from victims by threatening to expose them.
Police have seized their mobile phones and Sentro vehicle in which they had arrived in Ganderbal to collect the bribe from the Store-keeper.
