Police cracks down on pro-freedom camp

Srinagar: Police Thursday detained Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik while several other pro-freedom leaders including Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani were put under house arrest.
Malik was picked up by the police from his Maisuma residence early morning and lodged at the Kothi Bagh police station, a JKLF spokesman said in a statement here .
Malik was scheduled to lead a public in central Kashmir’s Budgam district, the statement said.
Hurriyat Conference(G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani, who arrived here from New Delhi yesterday, was put under house arrest at Hyderpora since late last night.
A large number of CRPF and police personnel had been stationed outside Geelani’s Hyderpora residence and he was not being allowed to move out, a spokesman for the outfit said.
Hurriyat Conference JK leader Shabir Ahmad Shah and Nayeem Ahmad Khan were also placed under house arrest and barred from visiting Kulgam, Kemoah and Bogam areas in south Kashmir .
“However, chairman Islamic Political Party, Muhammad Yusuf Naqash, chairman Muslim Conference Shabir Ahmad Dar and JKLF(R) leader Wajhat Qureshi, Muslim League’s Bilal Ahmad Shah, Freedom Party’s Ghulam Ahmad Maqdam, Abdul Rashid and dozens of other activists succeeded in reaching Kulgam where they addressed various gatherings as part of election boycott campaign,” a spokesman for the outfit said in a statement.
