Srinagar: Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India on Wednesday allotted additional 1,500 seats to Jammu and Kashmir under balance quota of the Haj Committee of India, taking this year’s total quota for the state to 6,723.
According to a circular issued by the Haj Committee of India, the MEA has given the nod for additional 1,500 seats to Jammu and Kashmir under the special quota for Haj 2014.
The state has already received 5,223 seats this year under its basic quota.
The additional seats are released every year under balance quota to the states on the basis of their Muslim population.
Under the balance quota, additional 250 seats have been given to Lakshadeep and 500 seats to other smaller states and union territories, according to the circular.
