Geelani thanks people for ‘shutdowns, protests against pro-India leaders’

Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani Wednesday expressed gratitude to people who ‘observed shutdown and held protests’ against the visit of pro-India politicians to their areas.
Addressing a gathering on his return from New Delhi at his Hyderpora residence in uptown Srinagar, Geelani said: “I congratulate and thank people who observed shutdown on the arrival of pro-India politicians in their respective areas.”
Reiterating his poll boycott call, Geelani said: “We must stay away from every kind of elections whether they are parliamentary, assembly, panchayat or municipal elections. Those who are with resistance movement must boycott.” He termed poll boycott ‘must and in the interest if movement’.
While hailing and thanking other pro-freedom groups for calling poll boycott, he said: “It is good that others have also called for poll boycott. We have been calling for boycott since 2013.” He said the boycott campaign should continue from every house to house. “Boycott is necessary. We are living under oppression and tyranny,” he insisted.
Geelani said it should matter to us who comes in power in Delhi. “They are all same. Whether Congress or BJP. We shouldn’t be interested in it,” he said. However, he added: Our demand is solution of Kashmir issue according to its historical perspective.”
“Azadi is written on our forehead and we shall have it,” Geelani told the participants of the rally. He was flanked by senior Hurriyat leaders. Meanwhile, scores of people welcomed Geelani and held pro-freedom and anti-election protest.
