Srinagar: Chief of the Mutahida Majlis Ulema (MMU) and chairman Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Sunday formally launched an awareness drive against the social evils.
A large number of people especially youth participated in the drive which began from from Kathi Darwaza area of downtown Srinagar.
“Feeling the need to form Mohalla reform committees in every locality the participants on this occasion including Muslims and the representatives of Sikh community declared their full support to social reform campaign started by Mirwaiz,” an MMU spokesman said in a statement.
Addressing a gathering on the occasion, Mirwaiz said time has come that instead of making speeches and issuing statements “we should go through self-introspection and assessment so that social vices like moving away from religion, liquor drinking, use of drugs, gambling, suicides and elimination of girl-child foetus as well as obscenity and cultural aggression could be dealt with.”
Mirwaiz said that there was a need to take the battle against these evils to conclusion “so that our land of saints could be cleansed from sinfulness and obscenity.”
“Mirwaiz said that for the last twenty years people of Kashmir are fighting against this oppression and suppression and are suffering from the worst kind of abuse of basic human rights in the struggle for freedom, but it is painful to see that a large number of our youth have got involved in various kinds of vices which is eating the basics of our social fabric. He said that the youth are our precious possession and it is our foremost duty to preserve and protect this possession,” the statement said.
“Though as a nation we are involved in a political struggle and common masses as well as leadership are offering sacrifices for the cause, at the same time as Muslims and defenders of faith our duty gets doubled for the cause of social reform and fight against social evils,” Mirwaiz said.
To successfully carry forward social reform campaign, Mirwaiz sought the cooperation of all sections of the society especially responsible citizens, parents, teachers, intellectuals, journalists, religious preachers and religion loving youth to eradicate social evils.
Mirwaiz said that though the importance of modern means of information like phone, computer, internet, television and other gadgets of communication cannot be ignored, at the same time people especially youth have to be educated about the negative side of these gadgets.
Mirwaiz said that in whatsoever form and at whatsoever place immoral activities taking place, it is the duty of the people to keep a close watch on such activities. He said there is a need to establish reform committees at people’s level in every locality who, keeping apart from sectarian differences, need to work with coordination to accomplish the task of social reform.
Meanwhile, Mirwaiz was given a warm reception on his arrival in Kathi Darwaza by a large gathering of people. At this occasion Syed Saleem Geelani, Molvi Hilal, Prof. Habibullah Jeelani, Molana Tahir and Sardar Jaswant Singh also addressed the audience.
