Motor accident tribunal awards Rs 14 lakh compensation to woman

THANE: A woman and her three children have been awarded a compensation of Rs 14.77 lakh by a motor accident claims tribunal here for the death of her husband in road mishap in Bhiwandi in April 2009.
The victim’s kin had sought a compensation of Rs 8 lakh.
Tribunal judge S G Girdhari recently ordered the Rashtriya Cargo Movers and United India Insurance Co Ltd to jointly pay the compensation along with 7 per cent interest from the date of filing of the claim.
The widow Parvinder Kaur Balbirsingh Virdi, 39, her sons Malkitsingh (18) and Gurdeep Singh (15), daughter Mirankaur (13) and mother-in-law Tarlochankaur Harbansingh Virdi (62) of Shahad in Ulhasnagar, had filed the claim and sought a compensation of Rs 8 lakh.
In their submission they told the forum that the deceased Balbirsingh was working as a private driver and earning Rs 6,000 per month at the time of accident.
Balbirsingh (45) had died on the spot when a trailer owned by Rashtriya Cargo Movers that was coming from the opposite direction hit the Tata Sumo vehicle, which he was driving. The accident had taken place in April 2009 near Quick Bite Hotel, Rajnoli Naka on Kalyan Bhiwandi Road.
The tribunal took into consideration several factors including the age of the victim, the salary at the time of death and the number of dependents. It directed the transport operator and the insurer to pay a compensation of Rs 14,77,500.
Amount of Rs 6,77,500 be handed over to the wife of the deceased along with interest, while Rs 2 lakh each will be kept in the name of the three children each as fix deposit in any nationalised bank for a period of five years, and balance Rs two lakh with interest to be given to the mother of the deceased.                       —PTI
