Srinagar: Chairman Hurriyat Conference (M) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Friday demanded withdrawal of troops from all areas of Jammu & Kashmir while reiterating the shutdown call for Saturday against the against extending lease of the Army firing range at Tosamaidan meadow in Budgam district .
Addressing a Friday gathering at Jamia Masjid, Mirwaiz said Hurriyat’s stand on the Tosamaidan issue was no different than its stand on the troops withdrawal from entire Jammu and Kashmir.
“The huge presence of Indian troops is not only being justified by malafide tactics but institutionalised under a well-planned strategy to make people of Kashmir more dependent, politically and economically,” Mirwaiz said.
Mirwaiz also rejected elections as a futile exercise and power politics.
“The drama of elections has been enacted right from 1947 but it has failed to bring about any change,” he said.
Mirwaiz also announced an awareness programme against growing social evils .
Meanwhile, High Court Bar Association (HCBA) has extended support to the Saturday’s strike call by Hurriyat Conference(M) Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq over the Tosamaidan issue and also called for demilitarization of entire Jammu and Kashmir.
In a statement, the lawyers ‘ body urged the international community to put pressure on India to respect the commitments it made with the people of Kashmir both in and outside its parliament and at the international fora
“Instead of allowing its forces to occupy more and more land in the state forcibly or otherwise for strengthening their illegal occupation, India must take immediate and concrete steps with regard to the implementation of U.N. Resolutions on Kashmir,” the statement said.
It further said that there would be no peace in the region unless Kashmir dispute was resolved in accordance with the aspirations of Kashmiri people and a chance was provided to them to decide about their future.
