SRINAGAR: Muzaffar Maqbool Thursday emerged as the winner of Open Mountain Running Championship that was held on Shankar Acharya hills.
Maqbool, one of the top athletes going around in the Valley, was followed by JK Bank’s Tanveer Hussain, grabbing the second spot.
Ishtiyaq Ismail of Kawoosa Narbal had to contend with the third position.
The championship, organised by Jammu and Kashmir Mountain Running Association, is the first of its kind this season, a statement issued by the organisers said. The state association held the event in association with Indian Mountain Running Association.
Executive member of Maharashtra Mountain Running Association Paresh Pimpale was the chief guest.
JKMRA general secretary Riyaz Ahmad Wani announced that events should be held in all districts of the state in the near future.
He said that his association will be holding National Mountain Running Championship in the second week of August with Doodpathri chosen as its venue. J&K Tourism Department will be one of the associate organisers and participants from various part of India are expected to make to Doodpathri for the event.
JKMRA also that that the sport was making its mark in the Valley and with Kashmir being a mountainous place, it could turn out to be ideal destination for promotion of mountain running.
