Anantnag: Suspected militants on Tuesday fired upon a policeman injuring him critically in this south Kashmir township.
The assailants fired upon constable Shabir Ahmad near Rahat Dedi Masjid in Lal Chowk area, officials said.
“The militants fired upon the cop with pistol from a close range. He received bullet injuries in his neck. He was shifted to district hospital Anantnag where from doctors referred him to SKIMS Srinagar,” said DIG south Kashmir range, Vijay Kumar, adding that the cop has been operated upon and his condition is stable.
Kumar said the militants also snatched the rifle of the policeman and decamped with the same.
Eyewitnesses said that soon after the attack government forces including Special Operations Group (SOG) of police and CRPF cordoned off the area to nab the attackers.
It was the fourth hit-and-run attack in south Kashmir in last one month. On March 3 two policemen were killed after militants fired upon them outside court complex in Pulwama township.
The attackers had managed to decamp with rifles of the deceased cops. On the same day an SOG man was stabbed and critically injured by a youth in the neighboring Pampore town. The assailant, however, while trying to snatch the cop’s weapon was overpowered by other cops and arrested.
On March 19 militants fired upon a police party in Kakpora town resulting in injuries to a policeman.
