Wet Desert likely to dampen coalition

Srinagar: With some influential quarters deciding to field independent candidate for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls for Ladakh, the wet desert is not going to be a cake walk for the coalition partners .
The chairman of the Ladakh Autonomous hill Development Council (LAHDC) Kargil, Haji Asgar Karbalai while talking to newsmen said an independent candidate shall be fielded from Leh with support from the Islamia high School and Imam Khomeni Memorial Trust of Kargil.
Haji said some names are being considered and in a few hours from now it will be finalised. Pertinently, Karbalai heads the local Congress unit in Kargil and was elected chairman of the LAHDC recently after a row with the National Conference. However, t he NC finally gave in to make way for Karbalai.
The coalition had nominated Congress leader T Sampant for the constituency and the LAHDC headed by Karbalai was expected to extended support to him. The Islamia High School and the Imama Khomeni Trust enjoy a lot of good will in Kargil. The going for T Sampant is definitely going to be very tough, believe local political commentators.
Sampant has other woes to care for. Some of the local Congress leaders are not happy with the alliance and may support the independent candidate.
People close to the Hill Council believe Karbalai was enraged by the no-confidence motion moved by the NC while he was away in New Delhi.
