Air India dives lowest in latest airfare war

MUMBAI: On Friday, the cheapest fares in the ongoing domestic air ticket sale were offered by low-cost carriers Go Air and IndiGo. On Saturday, Air India topped the list as it put out cheap fares on 108 domestic flights.
The Air India scheme covers 40 sectors on 108 flights with tickets at a flat rate of Rs 1,499, plus applicable taxes.
From the city, cheap fares are available on flights to Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Bhubaneshwar, Kochi, Kolkata, Goa, Rajkot, Indore, Nagpur and Thiruvananthapuram.
The sale in which all domestic airlines have participated is on till Saturday and the tickets are for travel from July 1 to September 30. In case of Air India, the validity is from May 3 to September 30. Unlike some airlines like SpiceJet, the fare on high-demand dates like August 14 and 15, which fall on Thursday and Friday, was the same as on other days.
Air India is generally costlier than the low-cost Go Air and Spice Jet, a trend seen even during the discount schemes in the last three months.
Neelu Singh, COO,, said: “The discounts have stimulated demand. We have seen an uptake in demand, especially for tourist destinations such as those in Kerala, Goa and the Northeast. Even though each airline has limited inventory when combined, it has turned out to be a sizeable chunk.”
Sharat Dhall, president,, said: “Air India has decided to join the flash sales and is offering discounts even during the peak summer season months of May and June, continuing all the way till September. This is a great benefit to leisure bookers who have not yet booked their summer holidays, as they now have the chance to grab tickets at lower fares. We have seen a significant spike in ticket sales since this announcement.”                  —Agencies
