2005: TRC Set Ablaze on LoC Bus Launch Eve

A fidayeen attack on the Tourist Reception Centre in the heart of Srinagar on the eve of the inaugural run of the Srinagar-Muzaffarabad bus service almost put the launch into jeopardy. But authorities decided to go ahead and the then Prime Minister, and the UPA chairperson flagged off the bus from city’s Cricket Stadium on April 7, 2005.

The bus was described as the mother of confidence-building measures (CNMs).  The police claimed to have recovered a body from the site, which it said was that of a militant involved in the attack.

Security officials admitted that it was a multiple lapse. The TRC had a standard security apparatus which was not significantly upgraded. With many government offices located inside the complex, people walked in and out continuously. It had three security pickets and a barricade at the outer entrance but physical frisking was random. That allowed the suicide attacker(s) to breach the security ring and charge in, firing at security personnel. The exchange of fire was intense enough to set the building ablaze.
