Shutdown, protests in Tral over forces’ ‘atrocities’

Srinagar: Locals held protests amid a shutdown in Tral area of south Kashmir’s Pulwama district Wednesday against the alleged excesses by government forces yesterday after a militant attack on Army patrol party on March 24.
Shops and business establishments remained closed and traffic was off the road in Dadsar and adjoining areas, where people also held protest demonstrations .
They alleged that after militant attack on an Army patrol, the Army and Special Operation Group (SOG) of police entered a residential house and fired shots in the air.
The army and SOG personnel also thrashed some youth, the locals alleged.
Deputy Commissioner Pulwama Manzoor Ahmed said that he would look into the matter and if the allegations leveled by people are proven, stern action would be taken. Meanwhile, protests were also held in downtown Srinagar against the arrest of youth during nocturnal raids by police over the past few days.
Scores of people took to streets in Nowpora Khanyar area, seeking release of the arrested youth, reports said.
A senior police official said that ‘crackdown against stone-throwers would continue.”
“We have arrested the youth on the basis of evidence of their involvement in stone-throwing and other disruptive activities,” he said.
