Malik, Hurriyat(G) flay curbs on pro-freedom camp

SRINAGAR: JKLF chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik and the Syed Ali Geelani-led Hurriyat Conference Thursday slammed the “government crackdown” on pro-freedom leadership ahead of Lok Sabha polls.
In a statement, Malik said that while democracy is considered to be a battle of ideologies the government by imposing curbs on pro-freedom leadership had proven to be “highly undemocratic and uncivilized.”
“Throughout the world people are given a chance to express their ideas and opinions before the masses in a free way . But, in Jammu and Kashmir, India which claims to be the world’s largest democracy and sells elections in the state as a free and fair process is actually acting like Hitler’s Nazi regime,” Malik said.
“The crackdown on the pro-freedom leadership ahead of the so-called elections has exposed India and its puppet regime in Jammu and Kashmir ,” the JKLF chief added.
The Syed Ali Geelani-led Hurriyat termed as ridiculous the government’s “explanation that curbs on pro-freedom leaders were imposed to ensure smooth conduct of upcoming elections.”
“ The crackdown on pro-freedom leadership proves that elections in Jammu and Kashmir are merely a military operation rather than a democratic process.”
The amalgam also challenged the government to “allow Geelani and other pro-freedom leaders to reach out to people and present their viewpoint regarding the sham elections.”
The Hurriyat faction said that even India’s Supreme Court had passed a ruling that “the election boycott campaign was a democratic right of every citizen.”
Meanwhile, Additional General Secretary of ruling National Conference (NC) Mustafa Kamal has said police should allow the pro-freedom leaders to carry out ‘peaceful’ election boycott campaign.
“It is their democratic right to run a boycott campaign. But, if they resort to violence or create law and order problem, they should be dealt accordingly,” he was quoted as saying by a local news agency
