Srinagar: The Syed Ali Shah Geelani-led Hurriyat Conference Tuesday said Crimea’s independence from Ukraine following a referendum will inspire the people of Jammu and Kashmir in their “freedom struggle against India.
“Crimea’s independence has proven that no region of the world can forcibly be kept against the will of its people with any other country for long and the choice and will of the people can’t be changed by force,” the amalgam said in a statement here.
The Crimea referendum had also proven wrong the theory that borders have become irrelevant with the world becoming a global village, the statement said.
“Though there are not much similarities between Kashmir and Crimean situation, the one important thing in common is that the people of Kashmir too want to decide their future as they have been opposing India’s illegal military occupation of their land since 1947,” the statement said.
Though India had been using its military might to suppress the just demand of Kashmiri people, due to the global changing scenario it will soon have to shun its stubborn policy on Kashmir, the statement said.
“The argument that freedom movements have been rendered meaningless due to irrelevant borders has been blown to bits by the referendum in Crimea. It has shown that while people may be ruled by force their sentiments cannot be,” the statement said.
The Hurriyat faction said the people of Kashmir are encouraged by the Crimea referendum and would expect India to “shun its rhetoric and rigidity and allow Kashmiris to decide their future through a plebiscite.”
“This will not only resolve the long pending Kashmir dispute but also improve India’s sullied due to its military occupation of Jammu and Kashmir,” the statement said.
