Srinagar: Job of a judge is to find solution, not winner or loser, Justice Surinder Singh Nijjar of Supreme Court of India said here Saturday.
“Good offices of Judges can do it,” he said after inaugurating the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Centre, at Mominabad here.
Justice Nijjar, who is the chairman, Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee of Supreme Court, highlighted the importance of settling disputes through ADR particularly mediation and Lok Adalats.
He said that settlement of disputes and conflicts through the system creates a “win-win situation” and no one is loser in the process.
Lauding the role of Lok Adalat system, Justice Nijjar said that thousands of cases are solved within a day or two through the system.
“This tool can be used to bring peace and harmony in the society,” he said, recalling that apex court recently settled three lakh cases in one day.
Constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.23 crore in the newly under construction District Court complex, the inauguration ceremony was attended by Chief Justice of J&K High Court  and Patron in Chief Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee J&K, Justice M.M. Kumar, Executive Chairman, J&K State Legal Services Authority, Justice Virender Singh, Chairman Mediation Monitoring Committee, Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir, Member, Mediation Monitoring Committee, Justice Muzaffar Hussain Attar and Member Mediation Monitoring Committee, Justice Tashi Rabstan.
The occasion was also graced by other Judges of the High Court including Justice Hasnain Masoodi, Justice Ali Mohammad Magrey, Justice Dhiraj Singh Thakur, Justice B.L. Bhat and Justice J.R. Kotwal.
Addressing the gathering, Justice M.M. Kumar laid emphasis on the importance of ADR, mediation and its relevance in the process of administration of justice.
He impressed upon the Judicial Officers and lawyers community to strengthen the dispute resolution through ADR.
“This is the golden day in the history of Jammu and Kashmir High Court when ADR Centre is being opened for facilitating people in solving cases through mediation and arbitration.”
He said that traditional cases involve high cost, hostility and time whileas mediation proves cheaper and less time consuming.
Justice Kumar also emphasised on opening up such ADR Centres in other districts of the State.
Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir in his welcome address briefed the gathering about the achievement of ADR Centre in solving the dispute across the State. He also highlighted the vision plan of ADR Centre for 2014-2015.
Justice Attar presented the vote of thanks and highlighted the importance of ADR Centre.
