TeH to sue Indian paper for ‘mischievous’ report about Geelani nominating son as heir

SRINAGAR: The  Tehreek-i-Hurriyat (TeH) , a constituent of the Syed Ali Geelani-led Hurriyat Conference, Friday said it was mulling legal action against the Times of India for a “factually incorrect and mischievous” report about Geelani’s son succeeding him as the chairman of the outfit.
“Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Geelani has neither nominated his son nor any other person as his heir, nor is there any possibility of such a move in the future,” the Geelani-led Hurriyat’s spokesman  said in  a statement.
The statement said that the TeH was “an ideological organization whose constitution leaves no  possibility for  appointing heirs as it considers any such move as undemocratic and against principles.”
“The report carried by the Times of India that Geelani sahib has nominated his son as his heir is baseless and mischievous and TeH is going to sue the newspaper and its reporter for which consultations have already been started with the prominent lawyers of J&K High Court,” the statement added.
The statement said that Geelani could not even think of such a move .
“Geelani sahib’s son is not even a member of TeH and therefore the question of him being nominated as chairman of the outfit doesn’t even arise,” the statement said.
The statement also slammed the report for being inaccurate in facts.
“Though Masrat Alam and Ghulam Nabi Sumji are on the forefront of freedom movement but they have nothing to do with the TeH as they are leaders of two separate constituent groups of the Hurriyat and the reporter by describing them as general secretaries of TeH has revealed that his report was not only baseless and mischievous but also based on inaccurate knowledge about the TeH,” the statement.
The statement also refuted claims about  Geelani having differences  with TeH general secretary, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, and Masrat Alam during the  2010 mass agitation and slammed the reporter for describing the duo as “hardliners.”
