‘Couple of SVSU students may face action for cheering Pak’

SRINAGAR: Uttar Pradesh’s Swami Vivekanand Subharti University (SVSU), which had suspended 67 Kashmiri students for allegedly cheering for Pakistan cricket team in a cricket match against India, may act against a “couple of students” while the others may be able to rejoin the campus within a month.
“We are eager to put this incident behind us, most students shall be back with us barring possibly a couple of students who have been found involved in gross misconduct and indiscipline according to the university rules and regulations,” SVSU founder Dr Atul Krishna said in a letter mailed to Kashmir Reader on Tuesday.
The Meerut-based SVSU had suspended the Kashmiri boys staying in two of its hostels earlier this month. They were accused of cheering and raising pro-Pakistan slogans after the victory of Pakistan team in Asia Cup match against India. The varsity, however, said the students’ expulsion from the hostels was a “mild punishment” taken “to ensure security of the students.”
“We are looking forward to put this issue to rest for the benefit of our students. As and when we finalize the schedule for their return we will notify the students. We expect the process to commence within a month,” Dr Krishna added.
The students were also booked by the UP police for sedition, causing disharmony and mischief. The sedition charges were later withdrawn on intervention of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The students, however, continue to face the two charges which are equally believed to be threatening to their careers.
The university has opposed the Meerut police statement that an FIR was registered against the students on complaint of the varsity authorities.  “Once a student is given admission he becomes the part of the varsity. We have an ordered an internal probe into this matter as was mandatory considering the gravity of the incident. But no legal complaint against any particular student or students was made on our behalf to police,” it said.
The suspension and subsequent of slapping seditions charges on the students has sparked anger cross the Valley. The students, fearing reprisal, too have expressed their reluctance in going back to the varsity.
