Geelani returns from Delhi, put under house arrest

Srinagar: Hurriyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani was Wednesday detained by police immediately on his return from New Delhi and placed under house arrest.
Geelani was detained at the Srinagar airport and brought to his residence at Hyderpora, where another police party was already present. The cops later blocked the entrance of Geelani’s residence with a police vehicle, eyewitnesses and reports said.
The Hurriyat chief had left for New Delhi on February 13 to undergo medical check-up and various investigations.
Meanwhile, a Hurriyat spokesman has condemned the authorities for placing Geelani under house arrest. “Police neither presented any court order nor written consent of administration,” the spokesman said in a statement here.
Calling the police action as “lawlessness and sheer hooliganism”, the spokesman said the house arrest of Geelani “has no moral justifications and government can’t present any proper reason for this act.”
“After the mass movement of 2010 when the house detention of (Geelani) started, (Chief Minister) Omar Abdullah and DG police have many a time (said) that his freedom is a threat to law and order situation and wherever he goes, the incidents of stone pelting occurs there.
“However in 2013, when Geelani Sahab (was) release(d) from the long house detention, he held many mass gatherings in Sopore, Shopian, Kupwara, Parigam (Pulwama) and Kulgam, in which lakhs of people participated and these gatherings where peaceful. After these peaceful gatherings there was no justification (for) his detention, but he was once again house arrested because this state is ruled by police and Army, and these Indian-sponsored rulers are acting as scarecrows,” the spokesman added.
