75 businessmen from 28 countries to participate in Kashmir handicraft exhibition

SRINAGAR: More than 75 businessmen from 28 countries are participating in ‘5th Buyer-Seller Meet’ organized from March 8 to 10 at SKICC here to exhibit and promote Kashmir handicrafts to ‘international craft lovers’.
“Buyers from Germany, USA, Turkey, Slovakia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Austria, Canada, Australia etc are visiting to participate in the event and we expect more people from some other countries to confirm their participation in next two days,” president, Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI), Sheikh Ashiq Ahmad told Kashmir Reader.
KCCI organises the international event with support of Ministry of Commerce, government of India to identify potential foreign buyers for handicraft and handloom products and to promote brand Kashmir.
“Emphasis has been laid to ensure participation of international buyers of eminence and simultaneously our endeavour is to involve the exhibitors with quality and assorted product line,” Sheikh said, earlier during the curtain raising of the event logo and launch of KCCI website.
The basic objective of the ‘Buyer-Seller Meet’ is to provide a greater opportunity for a large number of international buyers to visit Kashmir and meet large number of manufactures and exporters from one place and have preference to buy the world famous Kashmir handicrafts from source of origin, he said. Vice president of the KCCI, Mushtaq Ahmad Wani said this time the event will be different and more comprehensive, as the chamber is focusing on the multimedia and audio-visuals. He said number of short films about different crafts, like, carpets, shawls, sozni etc have be produced which shows the making of these crafts and toil of artisans, who are the real people behind the creation of these world famous Kashmir products.
“The promotion of Kashmir Arts international will help in sustaining livelihood of lakhs of crafts people and also revive and preserve the old tradition and heritage of Kashmir handicrafts. We dedicate this Buyer Seller Meet to the golden hands of our artisans who are the key players of this important sector,” said KCCI general secretary, Syed Musadiq Shah.
Former president of KCCI, Abdul Hamid Punjabi, while elaborating on the purpose of the ‘Buyer-Seller Meet’ said, “It is an promotional event and not a sale event. There should not be expectations that exhibiters would make huge sales rather it will create connections between buyers and sellers, provide future customers and chance to look for new market across the world while siting in the Valley itself.”
Former president GM Dug and treasurers of the KCCI, Gazalla Amin along with other executive members were also present on the occasion. KCCI also announced launch of new website, www.thekcci.com, which would provide comprehensive information about the chamber activities, its history and Kashmir crafts.
