1967: Elections Held for J&K’s 3rd Legislative Assembly

Elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir for the state’s third Legislative Assembly. The Congress party secured 16 seats, and was followed by the National Conference, then led by Bakhshi Ghulam Muhammad, with its tally of eight. The government claimed 59 per cent polling. Widespread rigging and irregularities were reported across the state.

1986: GM Shah’s Tenure as CM Ends
The tenure of Awami National Conference leader Ghulam Muhammad Shah ended, and the state came under president’s rule. Shah, the son-in-law of the Sher-e-Kashmir and brother-in-law of the then Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah, had assumed office on July 2, 1984 when MLAs owing allegiance to Dr Abdulllah’s National Conference supported him. Shah was administered the oath by the then Governor, Jagmohan. Since the coup, the Shah family has strained relations with the Abdullahs.
 
2001: ICRC Releases Report on Kashmir
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) released its report on the human rights situation in Kashmir.
“Women are raped in order to humiliate, frighten and defeat the enemy ‘group’ to which they belong,” the report said.

2009: Youth Killed in Nauhatta
A CRPF vehicle killed one youth and injured another at Nauhatta during protests in Old Srinagar. The killing triggered violent protests across the city. Authorities clamped curfew for four consecutive days.  In most of the Old City, people defied restrictions and pelted stones at the police and paramilitary forces deployed in large numbers to enforce curfew.
